The 5 Euro 2015 coin from Lithuania, titled “Fairy Tale Coin - Five Cats”, is a commemorative coin inspired by one of the most famous Latvian folk tales. It teaches that hard work and entrepreneurship are always at the heart of prosperity. The folklore heritage contains universal folk wisdom and morality.
The author of The Five Cats is the poet and artist Alberts Kronenbergs (1887-1958). It was first published in the magazine “Childhood” (“Bērnība”) in 1949. The cats in the tale are shown as quarrelsome creatures who cannot come to an agreement while collecting firewood together.
The silver coin was created by Anita Paegle, a well-known illustrator of children's books.
The obverse of the coin depicts a bed with five cats lying in it under a colorful striped blanket. On the right side, five of the most popular cat nicknames in Latvia are engraved along the edge: “Muris - Ņuris - Incis - Mincis - Puncis” (Muris, Nuris, Incis, Mincis, and Puncis).
The reverse shows a cat with a large bowl of porridge in the foreground. In the background are four cats holding small empty bowls and spoons. The inscription at the top reads: “KAĶI 5 EURO”.
