NBU coins are more than just a monetary equivalent. They tell the story of the state's formation, honor cultural heritage, and represent a valuable numismatic asset. Many coins have become true works of art—both in their artistic design and the uniqueness of their dies or materials.
On this page, you can purchase rare coins of Ukraine: circulation, commemorative, bullion (investment), and unique trial issues. All items undergo expert verification, come with authentic origin, and carry a quality guarantee.
History of Ukrainian Coins
After gaining independence in 1991, Ukraine faced the necessity of creating its own currency. Initially, there were plans to name small denominations "kroks," but ultimately the familiar "kopiykas" were kept. The first minting of coins took place in Italy; it wasn't until 1996 that production was moved to Luhansk, and later to Kyiv.
The National Bank of Ukraine introduced the first circulation coins in 1992: 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, and 50 kopiykas. Later, metallic 1, 2, 5, and 10 hryvnias were added. The design for all the coins was created by the artist Vasyl Lopata.
Types of Coins Issued by the NBU
Ukrainian numismatics covers various types of coins, each with its own purpose and value. Some coins are created for everyday circulation, while others are minted to honor important events or serve as an investment tool. Certain types are produced as trial pieces, making them extremely rare. Each type has its own characteristics: design, material, mintage, and circulation format. Understanding the differences between these types will help you properly build a collection or make a profitable investment. Ukrainian coins are roughly divided into several types:
- Circulation coins — used in daily transactions, though some rare specimens feature unique die varieties or mint errors.
- Commemorative coins — issued for important events and feature limited mintages.
- Bullion (Investment) coins — made of silver or gold, aimed at capital preservation.
- Trial coins — rare specimens with experimental variations in design or alloy.
