The 2019 $1 coin from the United States of America, titled “American Innovation - Pennsylvania,” honors the extensive medical research conducted to develop a cure for polio. It depicts the polio vaccine developed by Dr. Jonas Salk and his team at the University of Pittsburgh in the early 1950s. At the time, polio was a devastating disease that disproportionately affected children and young adults, leaving many paralyzed and unable to walk.
