The commemorative coin is dedicated to the literary and artistic generation of Ukraine in the 1920s and early 1930s, which gave a powerful impetus to the development of Ukrainian culture but was mercilessly repressed by the totalitarian regime. An important cultural center of that period was the Slovo House in Kharkiv, a hub of creativity and a place of tragic events, where innovative ideas were born, fierce intellectual debates flared up, and new artistic trends emerged. Mykola Khvylovy (real surname Fitilov) was a key figure in the cultural revival, one of the founders of Ukrainian post-revolutionary prose, a poet, and a publicist. His activities contributed to the establishment of Ukrainian-centrism and the integration of national culture into the global context. The artist's untimely death became a symbol of the collapse of the ideals of Ukrainian national communism and the end of the era of Ukrainian national revival in the 1920s and 1930s. This commemorative coin begins the theme of the Executed Renaissance, honoring the contribution of Mykola Khvylovy and all artists who, despite severe pressure, courageously created and developed Ukrainian culture.

The reverse of the coin features a stylized portrait of Mykola Khvylovy against a mirror background. The symbolic composition conveys a profound meaning: the writer's face appears to be imprisoned among irregularly shaped stone slabs, reflecting the totalitarian regime's attempts to destroy the memory of the artist. To the right of the portrait are vertical inscriptions: MYKOLA / FITILOV – the artist's real name, embossed, and MYKOLA / KHVYLOVY – his pseudonym, mirrored. On the left are the years of the artist's life – 1893 / 1933.
The obverse of the coin features a stylized inscription СЛОВО (SLOVO) – the name of the Kharkiv House of Writers in the 1930s. The texture of the letters reveals a sprout of winter wheat – an image of the young generation of artists whose lives and work were ruthlessly destroyed by the totalitarian regime. The tragedy of this historical era is emphasized by the pierced letter “O,” from which blood flows, reminding us of the painful wound in Ukrainian history and the unfulfilled dreams of talented artists. Below the text composition is the inscription UKRAINE, the year of minting – 20/25, the small State Emblem of Ukraine, the denomination 5 with the graphic symbol of the hryvnia, and the logo of the Banknote and Coin Mint of the National Bank of Ukraine.
