The 2 Euro 2023 coin from Slovakia, titled “100th Anniversary of the First Blood Transfusion in Slovakia,” honors medicine and its development.
The design features an equilateral cross as an internationally recognized symbol of medical care, hope and humanity. Each arm is inscribed with one of the four blood types: A, B, 0 and AB. Two more equilateral crosses are inscribed inside the cross, one inside the other, and a drop of blood is inscribed in the center of the image. Around the central cross, at equal distances, are the lower parts of eight test tubes, each containing a stylized drop of blood. Between each tube is a relief drop of blood. To the right of the lower tube are the stylized initials “MP” indicating the designer of the national side, Maria Poldaufova; to the left is the mintmark of the Mincovňa Kremnica mint, consisting of the letters “MK” placed between two dies. Along most of the edge of the inner part of the coin is the inscription “PRVÁ TRANSFÚZIA KRVI 1923 - 2023” (“first blood transfusion”). Along the lower part of the edge is the name of the issuing country “SLOVENSKO” with a dot on either side separating it from the inscription.
