A striking 2024 2-euro coin from Slovakia. It commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Košice Marathon—one of the oldest and most prestigious races in Europe.
The first race in Košice took place back in 1924. Since then, this marathon has become a symbol of endurance and an unbreakable sporting spirit. It is not just a race; it is the living history of Slovak sports, uniting athletes from all over the world.
Obverse. In the center of the coin is a marathon runner in motion, embodying dynamism and the will to win. In the background, we see the majestic St. Elizabeth’s Cathedral—the main architectural gem of the city of Košice. It’s the perfect combination of sports and culture!
At the top, in a semicircle, is the inscription: “KOŠICKÝ MARATÓN.” At the bottom is the country’s name - “SLOVENSKO” - and the anniversary dates: “1924–2024.”
The outer ring of the coin is traditionally adorned with the 12 stars of the European Union.
