The commemorative coin is dedicated to the generation of Ukrainian artists of the 1920s and 1930s, who became the driving force behind cultural change, developing literature, theater, cinema, music, and the visual arts, but were ruthlessly destroyed by the totalitarian regime. An important cultural center of that era was the Slovo House in Kharkiv, a symbol of creative life and, at the same time, a place of tragic events. One of the most prominent representatives of the Executed Renaissance was Julian Shpol (real name Mykhailo Yalovyi), a poet, prose writer, playwright, and screenwriter. He was one of the leading figures in Ukrainian literature, headed the Free Academy of Proletarian Literature (VAPLITE), and wrote the first Ukrainian formalist novel, Zoloti Lysenata (Golden Foxes, 1929). Together with Mykola Khvylovy and other creative personalities, he shaped a new Ukrainian culture, free from dogma and restrictions. In 1933, the poet became one of the victims of the regime, and his name was erased from Ukrainian literature for decades. This commemorative coin continues the theme of the Executed Renaissance, honoring the contribution of Julian Shpol and all artists who, despite severe pressure, courageously created and developed Ukrainian culture.

The reverse of the coin features a stylized portrait of Julian Shpol on a mirror background, marred by corrosion and oblivion, but not completely lost. To the right of the portrait are vertical inscriptions: MYKHAILO / YALOVYI – the artist's real name, embossed, and YULIAN / SHPOL – his pseudonym, mirrored. To the left are the years of the artist's life – 1895 / 1937.
The obverse of the coin features a stylized inscription СЛОВО (SLOVO) – the name of the Kharkiv House of Writers in the 1930s. The texture of the letters reveals sprouts of winter wheat – an image of the young generation of artists whose lives and work were cynically destroyed by the totalitarian regime. The tragedy of this historical era is emphasized by the pierced letter “O,” from which blood flows, reminding us of the painful wound in Ukrainian history and the unfulfilled dreams of talented artists. Below the text composition is the inscription UKRAINE, the year of minting – 20/25, the small State Emblem of Ukraine, the denomination 5 with the graphic symbol of the hryvnia, and the logo of the Banknote and Coin Mint of the National Bank of Ukraine.
