The 2026 Ukraine 5-hryvnia commemorative coin “Chernobyl. Rebirth. Bison” is dedicated to the bison - a rare species listed in Ukraine’s Red Book as early as 1980. In natural ecosystems, bison play an important role: in particular, by altering vegetation cover and dispersing seeds to other areas, they contribute to the preservation of biodiversity. The first recorded sighting of a bison in the Chernobyl zone was in April 2012. In the following years, camera traps and researchers repeatedly confirmed the presence of these animals in various parts of the exclusion zone. A unique international project to restore the species’ population was set to begin in 2022, but its implementation was halted by Russia’s full-scale invasion.
